Can A Vegetarian Do A Keto Diet? 

Yes, both vegans and vegetarians can do a keto diet successfully. With a little planning, plant-based people can also reap the benefits of ketosis

Most people assume that the keto diet may seem like it’s only for the meat-eaters. And that unless you are consuming high protein meat meals you can’t do the diet. However, that does not have to be the case. 

In contrast to an animal-based keto diet that is high in fat and low in carbs, a vegan diet is typically high in carbs. For a vegetarian diet to be considered keto-friendly it will need to include a wider selection of high-fat vegetables and stay away from high carb ones. 

The reality is that the most important ingredient while doing keto is actually the higher level of consumption of healthy fats. So opting not to have meat does not mean you have to skimp on flavor. 

There are a few guidelines to keep in mind since the keto diet is a little more restrictive but the results are worth the effort.

What Can I Eat On A Keto Vegetarian Diet?

Believe it or not, there is plenty you can eat as a vegetarian when doing a keto diet. 

The key is to focus on consuming low carb vegetables, nuts and seed, this includes nut and seed flours. And when it comes to protein sources vegans can rely on tofu and tempeh. 

If you are either a octo-lacto or octo-vegetarian than doing the keto diet will certainly be easier but that does not mean that vegans can’t also do the diet.

Types Of Vegetarianism 

  • Octo-Lacto vegetarians are permitted to eat both dairy and eggs
  • Octo vegetarians choose to consume eggs but not dairy
  • Lacto vegetarians are permitted to consume dairy but not eggs
  • Vegan consume no animal products or by-products and exclude both eggs and dairy.
