Keto Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Traditional banana bread made with overripe bananas was a staple in our home whenever extra bananas were in abundance.

For a while, my daughter had been asking for a keto version of my banana bread. “Mom, can’t you just add one green banana to the batter?” “I mean, how bad can one banana be?”  And each time, I would tell her, No, it’s impossible.

I’ll admit it. I wasn’t sure I could create a mock banana bread that could fool people’s taste buds.

After I went keto, I thought I would never enjoy a slice of banana bread again, which was sad considering it used to be a staple in our home.

Unfortunately, I learned years ago that the secret to moist banana bread is the use of really ripe bananas. That was just out of the question for this keto recipe developer.

Look, I know some recipes out there that add some banana to the batter and still call it keto, but I couldn’t see myself doing this. Some of us really can’t afford the extra carbs.

Are Bananas Keto?

If you’re wondering if you can eat bananas on a keto diet, the correct answer is no.

One medium banana has 27 grams of carbs and 3 grams of dietary fiber, for a total of 24 net carbs.

If allowed to ripen until the skins are dark, it could be twice the amount of carbs.

Bananas are simply too high in carbs and sugar in the form of fructose and, therefore no bueno on keto.

But don’t let that steer you away. This low-carb banana bread recipe delivers both flavor and texture.

Best Banana Extracts

At this point, you might wonder how it’s possible to create a banana recipe without using mashed bananas.

Well, that’s where using a high-quality banana extract is the only way to gain flavor without the carbs.

It’s perfect for anyone on a low-carb diet. Will it be exactly like regular banana bread? Maybe not, but it’s a delicious recipe that comes mighty close if I say so myself.

Clocking in at only 2.5 grams of net carbs per serving, the carb count makes it the best gluten-free, dairy-free keto chocolate chip banana bread!

I promise you won’t miss the ripe bananas in this healthy chocolate banana bread recipe.

A high-quality banana extract is keto-friendly and easily fits into your macros. Since a small amount packs a big punch, it’s a great option for anyone on a keto diet who misses the taste of ripe bananas.

However, not all banana extracts are created equal, so choose carefully. Look for one that captures the rich flavor of ripe bananas—though, of course, that’s just my personal preference.

OliveNation Pure Banana Extract works well in giving that rich banana taste without making it taste fake.

Another great option is OOOFLAVORS banana nut bread extract. I knew it would work because their extract does not taste like the artificial banana flavor you find in candies—their extract tastes like ripe bananas.

If you go the route of OOOFLAVORS, you’ll only use four drops, whereas OliveNation Pure Banana Extract requires a full teaspoon, but they both work well in this recipe.

How To Make Keto Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Miriam’s banana bread is legendary in our family—it’s the one recipe she knows will always get requested. However, our side of the family needed an alternative if we ever wanted to enjoy banana bread again.

Inspired by her classic recipe, we set out on a quest to recreate the same irresistible texture and flavor in a mock choco-banana bread. While it doesn’t match Miriam’s bread exactly, our version was born from the desire to fill that void.

This quick bread comes together easily. Start by preheating your oven to 350°F and greasing an 8×4-inch loaf pan, lining it with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients: almond flour, coconut flour, golden flax meal, psyllium powder, spices, salt, and baking powder.

Next, melt the coconut oil in a medium bowl and let it cool. Using an electric mixer, combine the cooled oil with a brown sugar substitute, sugar-free maple syrup, banana extract, and vanilla extract.

Beat the eggs in, one at a time, and then fold the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir in almond or coconut milk, followed by sugar-free chocolate chips. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

To smooth the top of the batter, wet your hands and gently tap the surface. Using your finger, create a shallow indentation down the center of the bread.

This will make a nice groove for the optional melted butter topping, which adds extra flavor and moisture.

For a dairy-free option, you can substitute the melted butter for refined coconut oil, or the top of the bread.

Bake at 350°F for 35–40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool on a cooling rack, and enjoy with a nice cup of coffee!

The Combo Of Flours

I’m a huge advocate for sneaking more fiber into my recipes. Honestly, I think many people on keto aren’t getting enough fiber in their diet.

That’s why I included psyllium husk powder in this low-carb bread—it’s my secret ingredient for an extra fiber boost.

I also used a blend of golden flax meal, coconut flour, and almond flour, all of which are naturally high in fiber and, of course, gluten-free.

Fiber is crucial for supporting healthy gut bacteria, so believe me when I say this high-fiber keto banana bread is a great choice.

Sugar-Free Chocolate Chip Options

When it comes to choosing which chocolate chips to use in this easy recipe, I personally love Lily’s semi-sweet chocolate chips for their lovely chocolate flavor and melting point.

If you prefer a more intense chocolate flavor, you could also use Lily’s dark chocolate chips. Either one works beautifully and gives consistent results.

But if you can’t get your hands on Lily’s chocolate, you can also use Hershey’s sugar-free chocolate chips. However, in this case, the chocolate flavor is not very rich.

Another nice sugar-free option is ChocZero’s Dark Chocolate Sugar-free Chips. As you can see, you have several options that will keep the carbs low enough for you to enjoy them.

Spices

When it came to getting the right flavor for this keto mock banana bread, I knew that in addition to an excellent banana extract, it also needed both ground cinnamon and nutmeg.

I know that not everyone adds these warm spices to their banana bread, but I disagree because it enhances the flavor and makes it taste like the real thing.

Of course, make sure that your spices are fresh. This is important since stale spices have zero value and can affect the overall flavor. I make it a point to replace my spices every season to ensure quality.

Best Low Carb Sweeteners

It’s important to note that this recipe calls for a substitute for brown sugar. When I used to make my original recipe for banana bread, I always used brown sugar.

It’s what I learned from Miriam, the banana bread expert.

So, I knew that using a brown sugar substitute was a must. My two favorite brands are Swerve brown sugar and Surkin Gold.

I also added a tiny bit of sugar-free maple syrup to mimic the flavor of brown sugar in this recipe.

My favorites are Lakanto Maple Syrup and Choczero Honest Maple Syrup. They both work perfectly in this recipe.

Having said that, you can really use the sweetener of choice and still get great results.

Once your keto banana chocolate chip bread has come out of the oven and has been allowed to cool thoroughly on a wire rack, you can wrap it in plastic wrap and store it in your refrigerator in an airtight container for up to five days.

Alternatively, freeze your banana bread loaf whole or in slices. Then allow it to thaw overnight in the fridge or place it in a 300-degree oven for 20–25 minutes until it’s hot and defrosted.
