How To Make Za'atar Spice From Scratch
Making this Mediterranean spice pretty straightforward.
In a small bowl, combine all the spices and mix thoroughly until they are fully blended.
Using a funnel, transfer the za’atar blend into a spice jar or another airtight container.
Store the container in a cool, dry place, where the blend will keep for up to one year; however, for the best flavor, it’s recommended to use it within six months.
While spices don’t spoil, they do gradually lose their potency and aroma over time.
Why Make Za’atar at Home?
Sure, you can buy Za’atar at specialty markets—but making it yourself offers distinct advantages:
Would you like to save this?
- Customization: Adjust spice levels to suit your taste.
- Freshness: Store-bought blends can sit on shelves for months. Homemade Za’atar bursts with flavor when freshly made.
- Quality control: You know exactly what’s going into your spice jar—no additives, fillers, or preservatives.
Plus, there's something deeply satisfying about crafting your own spice blends from scratch.
