In our family, we prefer sweet and tangy coleslaw. And it’s why my traditional coleslaw was often requested.

However, I needed to transform my family’s sweet-tangy coleslaw recipe into a low-carb coleslaw whose carb count wouldn’t kick us out of ketosis.

Thankfully, cabbage is naturally a low-carb vegetable, and by swapping out regular sugar for a low-carb sweetener I was able to create a good coleslaw that could be enjoyed guilt-free on a ketogenic diet.

Is Coleslaw Keto?

Well, if it’s traditional coleslaw the answer is no since it uses white table sugar. This makes it very high in carbs. As an example, KFC coleslaw has 30 grams of carbs.

A typical coleslaw almost always uses a sweet dressing and can have as many as 20 net carbs per 1/2 cup serving.

It really depends on how much sugar they have added to their dressing. Since this is usually the case, a store brought coleslaw is most assuredly not keto-friendly.

However, you can certainly make a homemade dressing that uses a keto-friendly sweetener rather than table sugar. This easy swap will allow you to enjoy coleslaw on a keto diet.

After all, when you make your coleslaw at home, you have full control over the ingredients that go into it.

The fact that cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable and it’s naturally low in carbs means that when you toss cabbage with a homemade sugar-free dressing you can have the perfect keto side dish salad.

In the case, of this creamy keto coleslaw recipe, I use regular mayonnaise, sugar-free sweetener, and tangy apple cider vinegar for what we consider to be the best keto coleslaw dressing.

I make my keto slaw with green cabbage but you can also use a bag of coleslaw mix which is easily found in your local grocery store if you want to save some time.

This recipe is pretty straightforward, what will take the longest is the shredding of the cabbage and carrots if you are doing it by hand.

If you have access to a food processor with attachments then it will make the shredding a breeze.

You can of course also cut the cabbage with a sharp chef’s knife and use a peeler to slice the carrot and then chop the slices into small pieces. Or you could use a box grater

Best Sugar Substitute Options For Sugar-Free Coleslaw

When it comes to choosing your sweetener, I have several low-carb options that work well with this low-carb recipe.

I really like Lakanto Monk Fruit Sweetener because the texture is spot on and because there is barely any aftertaste.

This is a great one, especially if you are new to sugar substitutes, because it mimics sugar the most, in my book.

I’m also partial to Swerve and erythritol blend, although you should keep in mind that it does have a bit more of a cooling aftertaste that some people dislike.

Alternatively, you could also use a stevia and erythritol-based brand like Pyure.  This is if you prefer to use stevia in your baked goods. If you go this route, you need to reduce the amount by half since it is twice as sweet.

Lastly, if you can’t easily find a more natural sugar substitute, you can also use Splenda with great success. I know not everyone would agree with me here, and I respect that, but in my book, it’s still better than regular sugar.
