God Wants Us To Live Abundantly
Personally, as a Christians and community group pastors, we feel that God is very interested in helping us in our daily lives. So why wouldn’t he want to help us lose weight if it’s something we need for greater health?
The Bible tells us in John 10:10 that Satan came to steal, kill and destroy but I (Christ) came to give (you) life, and more abundantly.
This verse reminds me that God takes an interested in our well-being that he wants to bless us abundantly. However, it also points to the fact that there is an enemy that is out to destroy our health.
Reasons To Loss The Excess Weight
I think we can all agree that research points to the fact that being overweight can put a lot of strain on our health. We know that it is one of the main causes of major diseases, including:
- type 2 diabetes
- high blood pressure
- heart disease and strokes
- higher risk of cancer
- sleep apnea
- fatty liver disease
- kidney disease
- pregnancy problems, such as high blood sugar during pregnancy, high blood pressure, and increased risk for cesarean delivery (C-section)
Why Jesus And Keto For Transformation?
Randy had been a diabetic for over 15 years and as a consequence had already developed a fatty-liver, was hypertensive, and sleep apnea. Being 80 pounds overweight had put a significant amount of stress on his body.
What were the main steps you took to bring your diabetes into remission?
In my case, it was the combination of a ketogenic diet and my Christian faith. The faith factor has helped me stay committed and the ketogenic diet keeps me feeling satisfied since I rarely experience great hunger anymore. Being accountable to my wife also played a major role. I am grateful that we do this keto lifestyle together.
How long did it take you to bring your blood glucose down to normal levels?
My sugar was stable after 4 months of faithfully adhering to the low carb keto lifestyle. It took another two months before I was able to get off all medications. At the time my doctor wasn’t fully onboard with a low carb diet, but he had a change of heart when he kept seeing the results. Today, he is a believer in the keto lifestyle.
Did you face any challenges or setbacks when adopting this new lifestyle?
At first, I craved the fast foods that had become a regular part of my life. I also had to deal with a lot of sugar cravings. Thankfully, the cravings were short-lived. Read Randy’s full interview at Diabetes And Me.
I believe in a God that desires the very best for us. That he wants to give us a full abundant life, not one of just barely getting by. If we are honest food can become more of a comforter than a source of nourishment.
However, we should never give food that much power. For years Randy struggled with his weight and consequently his health. When he finally surrendered his struggle weight loss with God was made possible.
It was his decision to go to God that transformed his life. It was the keto diet that was the instrument that God used to make eating healthy a lifestyle.
Although my story for combining Jesus and keto was not primarily to lose weight it was for help in managing chronic pain due to fibromyalgia, the steroids I was taking to manage the disease caused me to become pre-diabetic and gain weight.
Steps To Using A Low Carb Keto Lifestyle
By turning to food when we are tired, sad or even happy we set ourselves up to make food more than it was ever intended to be.
Developing a healthy attitude towards eating helps us not become addicted to any food group, or allow it to consume our daily thoughts.
Yet it’s easier said than done because old habits die-hard, and lack of support can be crippling.
For many, poor food habits can be traced all the way back to childhood, which is why we need to understand it’s a complex thing to change the way we view food.
Being patient with the process is essential. It’s been proven that those that lose weight too quickly can miss out on the important lesson of learning to eat properly for life.
So if you are interested in a long-term solution, choosing weight loss with God will help change your attitude towards food.
Can We Ask God For Help?
Is it possible to lose weight with God? To answer this question we first need to ask ourselves an honest question; Do we really want to lose weight? Why this question?
Because you may be surprised to know that many who try to lose weight self-sabotage themselves.
This is why some people may manage to lose a large amount of weight only to regain it all back and then some.
At the core of this problem is that they were truly are not ready to embrace a life that is so radically different from what they were accustomed to.
Get To The Root Of the Problem
There may be countless reasons why a person is truly not ready. Perhaps, there are things in their past that they have chosen to ignore or push back.
The idea of opening these doors can be too painful. If you decide to lose weight with God, you can get to the root of the problem and allow Him to deal with the issue.

The unfortunate thing is that in order to be completely free we need to be willing to peel some painful layers back. It’s not easy to face why we turn to food for comfort.
Why did we begin to use food to self-medicate? Why did we give up? It’s so much easier to just ignore the core root issues.
Do You Want To Be Well?
There’s a story in the Bible where Jesus asks a question that catches us by surprise. The story is found in John 5: 1-9, here we find a man who had been ill for 38 years and he was surrounded by others who were in a similar situation.
The sick gathered at the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem where history showed that every so often an angel would disturb the waters, and whoever entered the water first would be healed.
Something shocking happens in this story as our loving Jesus asks this man what seems to be a pretty insensitive question, “Do you want to be made well”?
Why would he be so direct?
How many of us would have been tempted to reply with some smart sarcastic answer.
Renew Your Mind, Change Your Life
What is Jesus really asking the man? Is he not asking him if he wants to truly change?
Jesus when looking intently at this man must have seen something to rightfully ask this. What did Jesus see? Perhaps, he saw a man who had grown comfortable in his surroundings.
Maybe, the idea of new life would be too frightening, after all, everyone around the pool knew him as the guy who had been there for years. His location and pain had become part of his identity.
It was in this predictable environment that the crippled man shared his life, told everyone about his plight, gained sympathy and felt part of a community. What would he talk about once he became whole?
Where would he hang out? Who would be his friends? His sickness had become a place of safety.
The reality is that although Jesus spoke the word, the healing power of God could only manifest until the man assumed the responsibility of choosing to be whole and risking the possibility of his life never being the same.
This is still the case for us today. For real change to occur we must be willing to bend our will. We must do things differently, no matter how uncomfortable or unfamiliar it may be.
Sometimes, this means changing just about everything in our lives in order to get the results we are hoping for. Are you willing to make a complete about-face?
What if that means there will be people who will no longer be by your side? Would you be willing to embrace a life where you find your voice? Or will you continue to stay comfortable for the sake of not stirring the waters, because people are not accustomed to you voicing your opinion?
Embrace The Change
There is no doubt that it’s not always easy to embrace change. We are creatures of habit and no matter how much we may pride ourselves in being “unique” even your uniqueness can become predictable if people know exactly how we will react in any given situation.
Change can make us question everything and that can be scary. Which is why I believe including God in your decision to lose weight is a wise one.
Sure you can cause a physical biological change to your body without God, but when you include Him you have a definitive advantage emotionally and spiritually over those who don’t. This makes it possible to lose weight with God.
When we understand that we are not just a physical being, but that we are spirits living in a physical body, it changes everything. We are complex beings with a spirit, soul, and body and every area must be properly taken care of in order to live our best life.
You can lose weight with God if you allow him into the process. Include God into your everyday life and begin to really live the life you were created for! Before you start your day make sure you ask God to help you stay on track and continue to ask him throughout the day.
Don’t place a bite of food in your mouth without asking him if you are physically hungry or if there is another deeper hunger that needs to be addressed. Let God fill those areas that need comfort.
Allow him to heal those broken places in your soul. This will prepare you to embrace your health journey and all that it affords.
